People often ask me what’s the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day because it was held in commemoration of the first anniversary of the end of World War I. This is why it is held on November 11th each year. It has since evolved into a day to recognize all of our servicemembers who have served our Nation, both living and deceased. Memorial Day was originally observed in the late 1860s as a commemoration of the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. Today, Memorial Day is a day specifically reserved to pay tribute to our fallen warriors. This is why it is appropriate to play Taps at Memorial Day services, but typically not at Veterans Day events.

As we enjoy the weekend, please remember that Memorial Day is a day to honor our Nation’s servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom and that of our allied partners. Please take a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are that the freedom we enjoy was paid for by those selfless few.
